Kids backpack for long car trips

This project was made during a student exchange at l’Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Milan. The project brief was about creating luggage for users of our choice. Our team chose to develop a backpack for kids between 5 and 8 years old that could not only contain all the toys a kid needs for a long car trip, but also enables the child to play with them safely during the trip. Our design guidelines were: security, autonomy of the kids and, of course, it had to be playful!

My knowledge of pattern making and sewing came in really handy for this project as I made all the ‘soft’ parts of the backpack. The hard surface and the legs where thermoformed in a tiny shop around the corner from the school and the snaps, holding the soft part with the hard one were installed by a real typical italian calzolaio (shoe maker)! I am still amazed by the craftsmanship culture that is still very much alive in Italy.

  • The backpack’s front, back and deployed.
  • Usage scenario, in five steps and in Italian.
  • Illustration depicting the backpack’s mechanism deployment in a few simple steps...
  • Ergonomy study inside the car.
  • Finishing sewing of our model by hand!
